She was about to become a college student—and step into a future that once may have felt impossible.

At 19, this intelligent, talented young artist was preparing for college after a childhood marked by severe trauma and instability. When her case manager reached out to Mercy Mall, she had very little to take with her as she prepared for dorm life.

Her request didn’t fit neatly into one Mercy Mall program—and that’s what made this story so special. Our programs came together to fit around her.

Staff, volunteers, and donors gathered clothing, bedding, a backpack, toiletries, and dorm essentials. But this wasn’t about simply checking items off a list. We learned her favorite colors, her style, and what she wanted her new space to feel like. We wanted her to arrive with things that felt like her.

When asked what she was most nervous about, her answer wasn’t moving somewhere unfamiliar. After years of instability, change was familiar.

Would she fit in? Would she find a friend?

At that moment, she was just like so many other freshmen preparing for their first day of college.

When a devastating house fire forced one family to begin again, they lost far more than their home.

House fires leave behind more than physical destruction—they can steal a family’s sense of security, especially when they were already working hard to overcome life’s obstacles.

This family came to Mercy Mall carrying the weight of unimaginable loss. Yet instead of focusing on what was gone, they shared gratitude for what remained: their lives, their faith, and the people God placed around them to encourage and support them.

At Mercy Mall, we can’t imagine facing this kind of loss without the hope that faith provides. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to meet practical needs while reminding this family they weren’t alone. Together, we helped replace despair with hope and surrounded them with the strength of a caring community.

This July, Michael will walk out of prison and into a brand-new chapter of life.

He has been accepted into a sober living program and is committed to building a different future. But like many individuals reentering society, he’s facing that first step with very little—limited resources, few supports, and no way to secure basic necessities.

Starting over takes courage. It also takes something many of us take for granted—the essentials (like hygiene clothing, hygiene products, etc.) that help someone walk into a new opportunity with confidence and dignity.

For Michael, this next chapter isn’t defined by where he’s been. It’s defined by where he’s going. As he begins the journey toward recovery, stability, and independence, he is being reminded of something powerful: every person deserves hope, every person deserves a second chance, and no one should have to start over alone.

Depression, health issues, instability, and no support system—this man faced it all at once. Yet through it, he held tightly to his faith, leaning on prayer as his anchor.

As he prepared to return home from the hospital, he did the heavy lifting—choosing to keep moving forward—while Mercy Mall was able to come alongside him, communicating care and compassion by providing essential items to create a space that supports his physical and emotional healing.

Through our model, we are able to keep thousands of items out of landfills each year. Donations are thoughtfully sorted and distributed to individuals and families experiencing crisis, while additional items are shared with trusted community partners. Because of this, very little is ever thrown away.

Joining 1% for the Planet allows us to deepen this impact and align with a global network committed to protecting and preserving our environment.

Founded in 2002, 1% for the Planet connects businesses and nonprofits working together to support environmental solutions around the world.

This step forward was also inspired by our neighbors at Kyrgies, whose commitment to sustainability has encouraged us to grow in how we care for both people and the planet.

Mary wasn’t just moving into a new space — she was trying to create stability, comfort, and a sense of home for her family after everything they had endured.

In the middle of that transition, she found connection and support.

She came to Mercy Mall. Not for extras — but for the essential household items and clothing that help make a new beginning possible.

We met her in this rebuilding place, offering practical necessities, dignity, encouragement, and the reminder that she didn’t have to do this alone.

Ruth arrived at The Closet by Mercy Mall at her school simply needing a pair of shoes. She had missed the previous school year because of significant family challenges and a lack of basic resources.
Having The Closet on-site allows natural conversations between students/families and resource coordinators, building relationships and trust. Through that encounter, the school was able to better understand her situation and help her move into a safe, stable home with her grandmother through a kinship program.
That one need met became a powerful moment of bridging something bigger — hope, trust, and honest conversation with her family.
