Tears filled her eyes as she unzipped the suitcase. Inside, she found not just clothes, but a brand-new name-brand purse and wallet—something she had always dreamed of owning but never thought possible.

For women leaving incarceration with nothing, a Case of Hope is more than a suitcase—it’s a fresh start. It’s proof that someone sees them, cares for them, and believes they are worth more than their past mistakes.

“These women cry when they open their suitcases,” shared an officer who picks them up for Mercy Mall. “Many of them feel like they have nothing good about them. But when they receive these items, they realize they matter.”

Without basic necessities, survival can feel impossible, and some may feel forced to steal just to get by—risking their future and even their life. A suitcase filled with essentials can be the difference between desperation and dignity. When you give a suitcase, you give someone hope, protection, and a chance for a new beginning.

Thanks to your generosity, a Case of Hope becomes so much more than a suitcase. We were able to pack 541 cases this past year! It offers a renewed sense of dignity to women who may have felt invisible for years. It communicates compassion, care, and the belief that their lives matter. Jessica’s first baby is on the way, and while she and her partner both work hard, their paychecks barely stretch to cover daily expenses—leaving little for the essentials a new baby needs. Living far from her family adds an emotional strain.  

“It’s really hard to be away from my mom, and I’m scared,” she admitted.  

Despite the challenges, Jessica finds strength in her partner and encouragement from her future mother-in-law. With her due date just weeks away, she reached out to Mercy Mall. Brenda’s story is one of perseverance and unwavering faith. As a first-generation Mexican-American born in San Diego, Brenda moved to Virginia three years ago, hoping to build a better future. But life took an unexpected turn, and she found herself navigating the challenges of single motherhood far from her family’s support.

With two young children at home, Brenda juggles the demands of her full-time job while striving to make ends meet in today’s challenging economy. Despite the hardships, Brenda chooses to focus on her blessings.

She’s deeply grateful for a friend who has become like a sister, providing comfort and community when she needs it most. Her faith is her anchor, and her church community surrounds her with strength and encouragement. “We are blessed,” Brenda says with conviction.

When Marlon walked out of incarceration, he carried more than the weight of his past—he carried uncertainty about his future. Today, Marlon has turned his life around. As a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor Assistant (CSAC-A) and Peer Navigator, he’s now the one offering hope and support to others walking a similar path. He calls it a “full circle” moment, as he uses Mercy Mall’s generosity—prayer, clothing, and essentials—to uplift others.

But Marlon’s story doesn’t end here. He’s pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services and dreaming big: to create a safe haven for the unhoused, battered women, and those struggling with mental health and addiction.

Three months ago, Beth’s life changed in an instant. Awaking from an afternoon nap, she was confused by the sound of an alarm and the smell of smoke. Stepping outside to investigate, she saw flames raging in the attic. Within minutes, her family’s home was gone.

When Veronica reached out to Mercy Mall, she was at a breaking point. Her sixth-grade daughter was being repeatedly sent home from school for violating the school dress code – she simply didn’t have the proper clothes to wear!
